Dear Portland BEC Members,
We recognize that every single one of us has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and we acknowledge that many have had to deal with stresses and challenges far outside the norm. Here we are together in the new normal.
We started 2020 as usual with presentations in January and February at Mercy Corps. Our March presentation also went ahead at Mercy Corps, although not without some significant last-minute speaker shuffling as our scheduled speaker had to quarantine for 2 weeks starting the weekend before the presentation. Thanks to the IT prowess of Austin Sloat, April’s presentation went fully virtual. And, while we look forward to and plan well in advance for our bi-annual full-day symposium, scheduled for June 2nd, we had to cancel that. It was a difficult yet easy decision to cancel the event. We simply could not have moved forward. The good news was that the presentations were already lined up and we offered those presentations virtually through the summer. We want to thank everyone who attended and remained engaged in our summer presentations in lieu of the full-day symposium. In fact, attendance at the virtual presentations exceeded some of the most well attended presentations we’ve held at Mercy Corps in person.
Since we’re not out of the woods with COVID-19, we’ll be maintaining our virtual presentations for the foreseeable future. We really wish we could present and interact with members in person, but we’ll have to wait a while longer. We’ll continue to monitor the progress of the pandemic and we’ll return to in-person presentations when the time is right. With the technology advancements we’ve seen since the start of the pandemic, the look of future BEC meetings may also differ. We may find ways of meeting both in person and streaming live. We’re actively exploring these new opportunities. In the meantime, please join us for another exciting year with the Portland Building Enclosure Council from the comfort of your own desktop. We apologize that you’ll have to bring your own lunch.
